Dyeing Easter Eggs

Dyeing Easter eggs in Greece is a cherished tradition that is rich with symbolism and part of the wider celebration of Greek Orthodox Easter. Traditionally, the eggs are dyed red, on Holy Thursday, to symbolize the blood of Christ, shed on the Cross, and the promise of eternal life. On Easter day people are cracking the eggs, known as “tsougrisma”. The person whose egg remains intact is believed to have good luck for the coming year.

Koulourakia are baked on Holy Saturday, just in time for Easter Sunday, celebrating the end of Lent’s strict fasting. These sweet, buttery cookies are famous for their twisted or braided shapes and come flavored with vanilla, sesame seeds, or orange zest. They offer a delightful way to break the fast and bring joy to Easter celebrations.
